For South African travellers, Zanzibar offers ease of access with no visa requirements—just an arrival declaration card to complete. With 2 x weekly direct flights departing from Johannesburg on flysafair (currently, none of the Cape Town flights offer a same day connection to Zanzibar due to the early departure from Joburg), and Zanzibar just one hour ahead of South Africa, it’s a conveniently accessible destination where managing jet lag is effortless. Flight time is only approx. 4 hours. Zanzibar is located in a malaria zone, so it’s advisable to take precautions. We recommend consulting with your doctor or a travel clinic before your trip. Choose Zanzibar where each moment promises to be a cherished memory.

Choosing the right hotel location in Zanzibar is important to ensure a memorable and enjoyable stay. Here’s a guide to help you navigate through the different regions and find the ideal spot that suits your preferences and interests (Please note that the majority of our hotel options are situated along the northern and eastern coasts):

1. North Coast: Tranquil Waters and Serene Beaches

The northern coast of Zanzibar, including areas like Nungwi and Kendwa, is renowned for its calm waters and serene beaches. Here, you’ll find some of the island’s most picturesque stretches of sand, perfect for relaxing and enjoying water sports. Unlike the east coast, the north coast experiences minimal tidal movement, making it ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and diving throughout the day.

  • Recommended for Relaxation: Uninterrupted sunbathing and peaceful beach walks.
  • Water Activities: Snorkelling, diving, and boat trips to nearby islands.

2. East Coast: Reef Walks and Marine Adventures

On the east coast of Zanzibar, including areas like Paje, Jambiani, and Dongwe, you’ll discover a vibrant marine ecosystem and stunning coral reefs. This region is known for its tidal movements, creating opportunities for reef walks during low tide. It’s a haven for kite surfers and wind enthusiasts due to consistent trade winds.

  • Recommended for Reef Exploration: Take advantage of low tides for reef walks and explore marine life.
  • Water Sports: Kite surfing, wind surfing, and sailing.

3. West Coast: Spectacular Sunsets and Tranquil Retreats

The west coast of Zanzibar offers breathtaking sunsets over the Indian Ocean and a more laid-back atmosphere compared to the busier northern and eastern coasts.

  • Recommended for Sunset Views: Enjoy spectacular sunsets over the ocean.
  • Seclusion: Experience tranquility away from the crowds.

4. South: Untouched Beauty and Wildlife

The southern regions of Zanzibar offer untouched natural beauty and a quieter ambiance. These areas are perfect for eco-tourism enthusiasts interested in dolphin watching, visiting spice farms, and exploring the Jozani Forest.

  • Recommended for Nature Lovers: Explore wildlife reserves, spice farms, and pristine beaches.

Accommodations in Zanzibar generally reflect a more rustic, authentic African beach experience, which may differ from the higher standards found in places like Mauritius.

Requirements: Each passenger travelling, irrespective of age, must have their own, valid passport. All passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay and have two blank pages available at the time of travel. In addition, CHILDREN under the age of 18 years at time of emigration or immigration must travel with an unabridged birth certificate Furthermore, written consent and specific paperwork is required when a minor travels with one parent only and if any child/children are not the biological child/children of the adults who accompany them through a border post.

All hotel guests are required to pay an infrastructure tax fee of USD5 per guest per night as per the Zanzibar Revenue Board and Government. This amount must be paid directly to the hotel upon check out. This is for 4 and 5-star accommodation (USD 4 for 2 and 3-star accommodation).

Starting 1 October 2024, the Zanzibar government requires all visitors to have inbound travel insurance. The cost is USD 44 per person. This insurance covers some medical emergencies and travel disruptions. We recommend that travellers also purchase their own travel insurance to cover additional basics not included in this policy.

Please read carefully the detailed information in the insurance link below and make sure you have the proof of purchase with you upon the arrival to Zanzibar. https://visitzanzibar.go.tz/insurancehttps://visitzanzibar.go.tz

Time: Zanzibar is one hour ahead of South African time.

Money: The local currency is the Tanzania Shilling (TSH), which is not available for purchase outside the country. Most hotels and Bureau de Change accept US Dollars and credit cards are widely accepted (inform your bank or credit card company of your travel plans to prevent any issues while abroad). For your convenience, we suggest carrying USD in small denominations for incidental purchases and tips during your visit.

Language: Swahili, locally known as Kiswahili, is the official language. English, French, and Italian are widely spoken in resorts.

Electricity: Zanzibar uses two-prong, round pin electrical outlets. We advise bringing an international adaptor. The voltage (220/230V) is similar to the UK and South Africa. South Africans should get a square pin adapter. Avoid leaving appliances plugged in all day due to frequent power fluctuations, which could cause damage.

Security: Like any city, Zanzibar is not immune to crime. Be safety conscious and don’t display cash or valuables. Leave jewellery and expensive watches at home. Keep your belongings safe – use the hotel safe for passports and valuables.

Tipping: Tipping is an accepted practice. Tip in US dollars if you can – carry US$1 bills with you.

Shopping: Explore a vibrant array of spices, wood carvings, crafts, textiles, jewellery, and art at Zanzibar’s local markets and souvenir shops. It’s a chance to discover the island’s rich culture and warm hospitality, whether you’re looking to spice up your cuisine or adorn your home with unique crafts.

Please note that plastic bags are prohibited as part of the country’s commitment to reducing single-use plastics worldwide.

Zanzibar, located just south of the equator, boasts a tropical climate that makes it an ideal year-round destination. Daytime temperatures typically range from 28°C to 32°C, with nighttime lows averaging between 20°C and 25°C. The island experiences its primary rainy season from March to May, featuring sudden afternoon downpours that offer refreshing relief from the heat. For delightful weather, consider visiting during the cool, dry months of spring (June to October) or from December to February, when it’s hot and dry (February in particular is known for its high humidity, making a hair straightener unnecessary!).

Given global changes in weather patterns, please keep in mind that weather conditions are subject to variability.

For the best deals to Zanzibar, consider visiting during the low season, which spans the rainy season (commonly known as the “long rains”) from March to May. Despite the occasional, (sometimes heavy) downpours, you’ll still enjoy ample sunshine and fewer crowds. Hotels and airlines often provide discounts during this quieter period to attract visitors.

To ensure availability and lower prices, plan and book your trip well in advance, especially if you have specific travel dates in mind (bearing in mind the limited availability of only two weekly direct flights). Airlines and hotels frequently offer early booking discounts, making it advantageous to secure your arrangements several months ahead.

For those planning a honeymoon or celebrating a significant wedding anniversary, please inform us during your inquiry. Depending on the hotel, special rates and additional benefits may be available to enhance your experience.

We recommend choosing an all-inclusive meal plan in Zanzibar for its convenience, value for money, and relaxation. It simplifies your vacation by covering meals, snacks, and beverages upfront, allowing you to fully enjoy your stay without worrying about dining expenses. It’s ideal for those travellers seeking a hassle-free getaway where everything is taken care of.

Alternatively, half board options are available at many resorts, providing accommodation, breakfast and dinner daily (excl. beverages).

Zanzibar offers a wealth of captivating sightseeing experiences beyond its beaches and water sports. Explore a spice farm to immerse yourself in the aromas of various spices, learn about local village life, and enjoy spiced tea with seasonal fruits. You can also embark on a traditional dhow cruise or journey to Pemba, located 80km from Zanzibar, renowned for its pristine beaches, diverse birdlife, and exceptional dive sites teeming with coral and marine life.

In addition to these activities, Zanzibar boasts numerous other attractions – here are just a few:

  • Wander through the labyrinthine streets and bustling markets of Stone Town, marveling at its Arabic architecture.
  • Visit the historic Old Fort, a landmark dating back to the 17th century, and delve into history at the Palace Museum in Stone Town as well as check out the Freddie Mercury Museum
  • Indulge in traditional dishes at the myriad restaurants in Stone Town.
  • Explore Jozani Forest to encounter red colobus monkeys and explore mangrove ecosystems.
  • Visit historic Prison Island, where giant tortoises roam, or savor a seafood dinner at the Forodhani night market.
  • Relax on the renowned Nungwi Beach.
  • Experience thrilling activities like kite surfing in Paje.
  • Dine on sensational seafood and enjoy breathtaking views at The Rock, a restaurant perched on a sea rock.
  • Join the vibrant nightlife at Full Moon parties on Kendwa Beach.

Zanzibar offers a diverse array of activities and attractions that cater to every traveller’s interests, ensuring a memorable and enriching experience on this enchanting island.

When preparing for your trip to Zanzibar, keep these travel essentials in mind:

  • Check your luggage allowance, which is up to 20kg on flysafair (note: some fares may not include free baggage allowance).
  • In Tanzania, plastic bags are prohibited to reduce single-use plastics worldwide. Avoid packing or using plastic carrier bags in your suitcases or hand luggage. Ziplock bags for toiletries are allowed if intended as permanent possessions.
  • Pack light, breathable clothing suitable for the hot and humid climate. Carry an umbrella or rain poncho for the rainy season from March to June.
  • Bring beach and casual wear for daytime activities and smart casual attire for evenings. Men should have long pants for certain settings, and both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees in town to respect local customs. Avoid revealing clothing like halter-tops and miniskirts.
  • Wear light sandals or flip-flops, and be prepared for places that require shoe removal before entry. Comfortable walking shoes are advisable for sightseeing.
  • Pack essential medications, including those for upset stomachs, and don’t forget chargers for your devices.
  • For activities such as snorkelling, bring your own goggles and snorkels for comfort, although rentals are available at most resorts. Carry mosquito repellent and consider bringing an underwater camera for capturing memorable moments.
  • Obtain travel insurance for peace of mind
