Each of the 115 tropical islands that make up Seychelles is unique. Mahé with its 65 beaches and lush forests to the legendary Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve on Praslin, home to the iconic Coco de Mer palm tree. Experience the tranquillity of car-free La Digue and the secluded beauty of Desroches and Silhouette islands. Discover exceptional scuba diving opportunities on stunning Cerf Island.
Seychelles also boasts a rich biodiversity, including endangered green turtles, and offers world-class deep-sea fishing and legendary scuba diving sites. Renowned as one of the world’s most romantic honeymoon destinations, Seychelles promises unforgettable experiences.
For South African travellers, Seychelles offers ease of access with no visa requirements—just a straightforward digital Travel Authorization to complete. With multiple weekly direct Air Seychelles flights departing from Johannesburg, and Seychelles just two hours ahead of South Africa, it’s a conveniently accessible destination where managing jet lag is effortless. Choose Seychelles and embark on a holiday filled with natural wonders and unparalleled beauty.
The three most popular islands in the Seychelles archipelago are Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue. Home to 98% of the Seychelles’ population, these three are clustered in the archipelago’s northeast area known as the Inner Island group. Mahé and Praslin are Seychelles’ largest islands and home to most of our luxury holiday resorts.
The first port of call for most visitors to the Seychelles is Mahé. This is the largest island of the Seychelles and from here your resort is reached by road transfer. All hotels on Mahé are strategically located across the island to offer guests a variety of experiences amidst its stunning natural landscapes.
Beau Vallon is the perfect base on Mahé for travellers seeking a vibrant coastal retreat with convenient access to dining and entertainment. With soft sands and clear waters, it’s perfect for swimming and water sports (the only beach where motorized waters sports are on offer). Plus, it’s a gateway to Mahé’s many attractions and opportunities for island hopping to nearby gems.
If you are staying on Praslin or one of the other islands, a boat transfer or short domestic flight will get you there. Due to the late evening arrival from Johannesburg into Mahé, a same day connection to Praslin is not possible. Praslin lies 45km from Mahé, about an hour by boat or 15 minutes by air. Hotels on Praslin, too are strategically located to offer easy access to the island’s stunning beaches, natural attractions, and vibrant marine life, ensuring a memorable stay for visitors.
From Praslin, you can easily embark on a short ferry ride for a day trip to the serene island of La Digue. Here you can rent a bicycle to uncover its gems, from the iconic Anse Source d’Argent beach with its granite boulders to the crystalline waters that beckon exploration.
Important to note: The Government of Seychelles, in its continuous commitment to preserving the breathtaking natural beauty of the archipelago and promoting sustainable tourism, has introduced the Seychelles’ Tourism Environmental Sustainability Levy. The newly introduced levy, charged in Seychelles Rupees on a per person / per night basis, will be applied in-destination and collected directly by the tourism accommodations upon check out.
This information is intended as a guideline and information may change without prior notice.
Requirements: Each passenger travelling, irrespective of age, must have their own, valid passport. All passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay and have two blank pages available at the time of travel. In addition, CHILDREN under the age of 18 years at time of emigration or immigration must travel with an unabridged birth certificate Furthermore, written consent and specific paperwork is required when a minor travels with one parent only and if any child/children are not the biological child/children of the adults who accompany them through a border post.
All travellers need to complete a digital Travel Authorization and apply for entry into Seychelles https://seychelles.govtas.com/ Cost of 10 Euros per person. This can be done from 30 days before travel. For last minute application same is at the cost of 70 Euros per person. You will receive an email confirmation that will allow you to travel to Seychelles.
A Seychelles’ Tourism Environmental Sustainability Levy will be collected directly by the tourism accommodations upon check out.
The first port of call for most visitors to the Seychelles is Mahe. This the largest island of the Seychelles and from here your resort is reached by road transfer. If you are staying on Praslin or one of the other islands, a boat transfer or short domestic flight will get you there.
Time: Seychelles time is two hours ahead of South African time.
Money: The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee (SCR). Although tourist prices are often quoted in Euros, you can also pay in Rupees and often also in US Dollars. Most hotels and shops accept major credit cards.
Language: French, Seychellois Creole and English are the official languages in Seychelles.
Electricity: Throughout Seychelles the voltage is 220-240 volts AC 50 Hz. Seychelles uses the British standard square three-pin, 13 amp sharp electric plug. Visitors from countries other than the United Kingdom are advised to bring their own adaptors.
Security: Seychelles is considered a safe destination for travellers. Still, be safety conscious and don’t display cash or valuables. Ensure that your passports and valuables are safely stored in the safe in your room.
Tipping: Tipping is not compulsory. Most charges (restaurants, taxis, porters, and others) already include 5-10% service charge. As a reward for exceptional service, a nominal tip is warmly received.
Shopping: Those expecting extensive shopping options in Seychelles may find themselves wanting. Victoria, the charming capital, offers a few noteworthy shops, and for a more upscale shopping experience stroll through the sophisticated Eden Plaza on Eden Island.
Located in the heart of Victoria, the Sir Selwyn Clarke Market is famous for its vibrant ambiance and wide array of offerings. Visitors can browse through a diverse selection of goods, including fresh fruits, vegetables, aromatic spices, and local artworks. On Saturdays, the market comes alive as it becomes a bustling hub where Seychellois engage in their daily activities.
The islands are particularly known for exquisite handicrafts, which range from handmade jewellery and batik clothing to art installations showcasing Seychellois talent. Specialty items unique to Seychelles, such as the renowned Coco-de-mer nut, make for special souvenirs that capture the essence of this island paradise.
Thanks to its equatorial location, and outside the cyclone belt, Seychelles has none of the extreme weather that is typical of tropical destinations. It enjoys an inviting year-round climate. The best times to visit are typically April, May, October, and November, with April being particularly calm and warm. These months are perfect for sunbathing, wildlife encounters, and exhilarating scuba diving adventures.
During the northwest trade winds from October to March, enjoy tranquil seas and warm, humid weather. January and February bring rejuvenating rains that nourish rivers and streams across the islands. From May to September, experience cooler and drier conditions, although seas can be more active along the southeastern coasts (note: this period may not be ideal for travellers prone to seasickness if you are planning to catch a ferry). While seaweed may occasionally wash up on beaches in the southern regions of Mahé and Praslin Island during this time, pristine stretches of seaweed-free sand are always nearby. When selecting accommodation, it is worth taking into account the trade winds. For instance, during southeast winds, opting for accommodations on the western side of the islands may provide a more enjoyable experience.
Given global changes in weather patterns, please keep in mind that weather conditions are subject to variability.
Typically, holidays outside of European holiday periods tend to offer more budget-friendly options, since Europe is the Seychelles’ primary market. Therefore, the recommended periods for travel are September to mid-December, mid-January to April (taking into account Easter holidays) and May to mid-June.
It’s advisable not to delay booking, as accommodations often fill up quickly, so ‘the early bird catches the worm’ holds true in Seychelles too.
If you’re planning a honeymoon or celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary, it’s advisable to inform us at the time of inquiry. Depending on the hotel, special rates and additional benefits may be available.
The Seychelles are not your typical All-Inclusive holiday destination. While a few accommodations offer these packages, they are relatively uncommon. All-Inclusive holidays cater to those who prefer to have everything on-site and are satisfied with the activities provided by one resort.
Seychelles differs from destinations like Mauritius in that visitors are encouraged to venture beyond the resort boundaries and discover the islands’ natural beauty. Many resorts are quieter during the day as guests explore the surroundings.
Instead of opting for Bed & Breakfast, consider choosing Half Board (including breakfast and dinner) to unwind and enjoy evenings at the hotel, unless your accommodation is near restaurants and you prefer dining out (e.g., at Beau Vallon Bay). Some hotels also offer Full Board (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner without drinks). Please keep in mind that the Seychelles is known for its higher costs.
No two islands are the same and every island has its own hidden gem, must-see attractions, beautiful beaches and not-to-miss experiences. Here are a few MUST SEEs/Dos:
When getting ready for your Seychelles trip, remember the luggage allowances: up to 30kg in economy class and 40kg in business class for checked bags (Please note that the maximum weight per checked bag is 32KG). For flights between Mahé and Praslin, please keep in mind the limit of 23KG per checked bag.
Given Seychelles’ consistent warmth throughout the year, it’s best to pack light, comfortable clothing. Resorts generally have a relaxed atmosphere, so light attire should suffice for most occasions. It’s also wise to include a thin rain jacket for any unexpected showers. Remember to pack your beachwear, sunscreen, and sunglasses to make the most of the sunny weather.
Ensure you take along chargers for all your devices. Bringing your own goggles and snorkels is recommended. Don’t forget mosquito repellent and consider bringing an underwater camera to capture memorable moments.
