Travelling from South Africa to Thailand typically involves flights with layovers, as there are no direct flights between these two countries. The most common layover hubs include major cities in the Middle East such as Dubai or Doha, or other Southeast Asian cities like Singapore. South African travellers usually land in Bangkok and then connect to destinations like Koh Samui, or they opt to fly directly into Phuket.
The total travel time can vary significantly depending on the duration and location of the layover, but generally ranges from 15 to 20 hours.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and is undeniably the country’s most popular beach destination with a vibrant nightlife, bustling market stalls, a family atmosphere or romantic seclusion.
– Patong Beach, Phuket’s liveliest spot, is lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars, perfect for sunbathing, jet skiing, kayaking, and parasailing. Experience vibrant nightlife along Bangla Road with its array of bars, discos, and markets.
– Karon Beach, generally quieter than Patong, appeals to families, couples, and art enthusiasts, offering excellent swimming, snorkelling, and diving. Its vibrant centre provides a wide selection of restaurants, shops, and entertainment.
– Kata Beach is highly favoured by families for its village-like atmosphere, featuring abundant shops, excellent restaurants, and nightlife options.
– Rawai Beach serves as a hub for day boat excursions to Phuket’s surrounding islands, with many waterfront restaurants offering freshly caught seafood.
Coconut Island also known as Koh Maphrao, is a serene and largely uninhabited getaway just off the bustling east coast of Phuket, Thailand’s busiest island. It offers a unique glimpse into Thailand’s pristine beauty, reminiscent of what early explorers might have encountered when discovering this stunning part of the world.
Phi Phi Island is located two hours by ferry from Phuket (some resorts also offer a speedboat service) and offers a quieter area where sandy beaches lead to aquamarine bays filled with marine life. Phi Phi Ley, an uninhabited island within the archipelago, includes the famed Maya Bay, featured in the movie “the Beach”, and boasts breathtaking natural beauty.
Khao Lak (north of Phuket) is on Thailand’s mainland west- coast and is a less crowded tourist destination with a rugged natural beauty. It offers tranquil resorts amidst scenic mountains, pristine waterfalls, and excellent snorkelling opportunities along its white sand beaches and coral reefs, particularly near the nearby Similan Islands. (By Road: Phuket to Khao Lak takes approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes)
Krabi with its towering limestone cliffs, lush jungles, secluded beaches and luxury resort options, Krabi offers everything you could want for your Thailand holiday without the crowds, and the perfect vacation would be to combine a few nights here with a stay in Phuket, giving you the best of both worlds. (By Road: Phuket to Krabi is about 2 hours and 30 minutes)
Ko Samui, famous for its palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, and lush rainforests, offers a haven for adventurers, beachgoers, and party enthusiasts alike. Chaweng Beach, known for its vibrant nightlife, hosts numerous restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. (By air: Phuket to Koh Samui is about 55 minutes)

Requirements: South African passport holders can enter Thailand for 60 days visa free for tourism purposes. On arrival in Thailand, you will be required to present a return ticket or onward travel arrangements. Each passenger travelling, irrespective of age, must have their own, valid passport. All passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay and have two blank pages available at the time of travel. In addition, CHILDREN under the age of 18 years at time of emigration or immigration must travel with an unabridged birth certificate Furthermore, written consent and specific paperwork is required when a minor travels with one parent only and if any child/children are not the biological child/children of the adults who accompany them through a border post.
Time: Thailand is 5 hours ahead of South Africa.
Money: The currency is the Thai Baht which is better for bargaining and shopping in markets. You can exchange money at any authorised money exchanger. US Dollars, Pounds and Euros are accepted at hotels and major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in hotels, shops and large restaurants.
Language: Thai is the official language of Thailand, and English is widely spoken in popular tourist areas.
Electricity: The electric current is 220 volts AC and the majority of electrical outlets take a round, two-pronged slim plug (the same as us!). Few outlets feature three holes (grounded outlets) so it is often necessary to have a three-to-two-prong adapter.
Security: Ensure your safety by avoiding the display of cash or valuables. It’s advisable to leave jewellery and expensive watches at home. Additionally, utilize the hotel safe for storing passports and valuables to keep them secure. Drink only bottled water and avoid ice unless you know it is made from bottled or boiled water. Be cautious when eating from food vendors on the street.
Tipping: A service charge is already included in all prices. Tips, in general, are not mandatory, and you should only give them if you are really content with the service offered. Waiters, bellboys, porters, restroom attendants and taxi drivers will happily accept loose change
Shopping: Shopping in Thailand is a vibrant and diverse experience that caters to all tastes and budgets. From bustling street markets to luxurious shopping malls, Thailand offers something for everyone. Street markets like Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok are famous for their lively atmosphere and vast array of goods. Here, you can find everything from clothing and accessories to handicrafts, antiques, and delicious street food. Bargaining is common in markets, so don’t hesitate to negotiate for the best price while maintaining a friendly demeanour. Throughout Thailand, shopping is not just about acquiring goods but also about experiencing local culture and traditions. Whether you’re exploring markets, browsing malls, or visiting specialty shops, shopping in Thailand offers a glimpse into the country’s rich diversity and vibrant lifestyle.
Culture & Religion: It is important to show respect for the Thai Royal Family. In Buddhist culture, the head is the most sacred part of the body. Do not touch or pat people’s heads, not even children, and do not point your feet at people or an object. Do not climb over or sit on Buddha monuments. Do not touch or give anything directly to a Buddhist monk if you are a woman.
Thailand experiences three main seasons:
During the cool season (November-February), temperatures are pleasant with lower rainfall and humidity. It’s peak tourist season, especially in December and January, so booking accommodation early is advisable. This period is ideal for exploring Thailand and is popular for beach holidays from December to April.
During the hot season (March-May), the combination of high humidity and temperatures makes coastal activities and beach visits particularly appealing.
The monsoon (green) season (May/June-October) sees occasional tropical downpours but also plenty of sunny days to enjoy Thailand at its greenest. Promotions on flights and accommodations are common during this time. Due to the varying weather patterns between the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Coast, May to July can still be an ideal time for a beach vacation on islands like Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
Given global changes in weather patterns, please keep in mind that weather conditions are subject to variability.
South Africans often find the best deals for travelling to Thailand during the green season, from May to October (excl. school holidays). This period offers lower prices on accommodations, flights and tours. Despite occasional rain showers, the weather remains generally pleasant with plenty of sunny days, providing a great opportunity to explore Thailand without the peak-season crowds.
For those planning a honeymoon or celebrating a significant wedding anniversary, please inform us during your inquiry. Depending on the hotel, special rates and additional benefits may be available to enhance your experience.
The most common meal plan offered by hotels and resorts is typically Bed and Breakfast (B&B). This plan includes accommodation and breakfast as part of the package and gives guests the flexibility to explore local dining options for lunch and dinner, which is popular among travellers who enjoy sampling Thai cuisine at nearby restaurants and street markets.
Some beach resorts provide all-inclusive options, especially for families seeking a resort experience focused on relaxation rather than venturing out for meals and activities
Whether you’re enjoying a beach getaway in Phuket or one of Thailand’s islands or immersing yourself in the vibrant city life of Bangkok, each destination offers a wealth of activities. As evening falls, the entertainment options abound, from traditional Thai dancing and bustling nightclubs to browsing through lively night markets.
Just some ideas:
Things to do in Thailand
When getting ready for your Thailand trip, remember that different airlines have different baggage allowances.
Pack lightweight clothing suitable for warm weather or warmer layers for cooler seasons. Include a lightweight rain jacket for unexpected showers. Modest attire is necessary for visiting sacred sites, ensuring shoulders and legs are covered (long, loose pants and long-sleeved cotton shirts are best). Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring. Don’t forget sunscreen, lip balm, a hat, and sunglasses for sun protection. Pack a mini first aid kit and any prescription medications you need. Hand sanitizer and insect repellent will add comfort. Remember to respect local customs by dressing appropriately outside beach and resort areas and in religious shrines. For dinner, opt for smart casual attire, with men typically required to wear long trousers.
