What’s Included in Mauritius Holiday Packages

What’s Included in Mauritius Holiday Packages (And What’s Usually Not)

If you’re comparing Mauritius holiday packages, you’ll notice they can look very similar on paper — flights, hotel, meals, done. But in reality, what’s included (and what isn’t) can make the difference between a smooth, stress-free holiday and a trip full of little frustrations.

I arrange Mauritius holidays every week, mostly for families and couples often celebrating something special. This guide is based on the questions I get asked before booking — and the misunderstandings I help clients avoid after booking. My goal is simple: help you know exactly what you’re paying for.

What’s usually included in Mauritius holiday packages

Most standard Mauritius packages include the following:

1. Flights

Return flights are included, along with airport taxes and fees. I always look carefully at flight times — arriving earlier and departing later can give you almost a full extra day on the island without paying for more nights. Direct flights are usually preferred, and aircraft type matters more than people realise especially when you’re travelling with kids.

2. Airport transfers

In the packages I arrange at Islandwize, airport transfers are included unless you ask to exclude them. Your transfer is often your first introduction to Mauritius — a relaxed drive through villages, sugarcane fields, and coastal roads — and a much nicer start than figuring things out yourself after a long flight.

3. Accommodation

Your hotel stay is included for a set number of nights in a specific room category. In most cases, this is based on the most affordable option (also called the entry-level or lead-in room). I also take into account the maximum number of guests allowed per room, as well as current availability.

4. Meal plan

This could be half-board (breakfast and dinner), full-board (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or all-inclusive. Mauritius resorts price food and drinks at international rates, so meal plans play a big role in the overall value of your package.

Slow lunches, ocean views — all part of the experience

What’s usually not included (and catches people out)

This is where expectations can slip.

1. Infant seating on flights and airport transfers

If you’re travelling with a child under two, most packages assume the infant sits on a parent’s lap, as this is the cheapest fare. A separate seat can be booked at a higher fare, if the extra space and comfort is important to you. Bassinets may be available on some flights but are not always guaranteed. Car seats are usually not permitted on standard seat-in-coach airport transfers. If travelling with young children and a car seat is non-negotiable for you, upgrading to a private transfer is typically the best option.

2. Early check-in and late check-out

Hotel check-in is generally from around 2pm, and check-out between 10am and noon. Flights don’t always line up with this. Early check-in or late check-out isn’t guaranteed unless you pre-book it (often by paying for an extra night). You can use the resort facilities and store luggage — but having a room ready after an overnight flight makes a world of difference.

3. Room occupancy rules

Many people assume any number of children can share a room with their parents. In reality, resorts have strict maximum occupancy rules per room category. This affects pricing and availability, especially for larger families.

Single occupancy pricing

Single rooms almost always cost more per person. This applies even when one adult is sharing with one child — the lower “sharing” rate usually requires two adults in the room.

4. “Perfect” beaches everywhere

Mauritius has beautiful beaches, but not every resort has the same beach experience. Some face calm lagoons ideal for young children; others are near reefs with coral or rocky entry points. The east coast can be windier and rougher, while the north and west are generally more sheltered. I always recommend packing beach shoes, especially for kids.

Cheap vs premium packages: what actually changes

The difference isn’t just luxury — it’s experience.

Budget packages usually include:

  • Smaller and simpler rooms with basic amenities

  • Limited dining options

  • Simpler buffets and standard drinks

  • Fewer activities and facilities

Premium packages often include:

  • Larger rooms or suites with better views

  • Multiple restaurants and premium beverages

  • Modern gyms, kids’ clubs, and water sports

  • Spa access and wellness facilities

  • Higher service levels, sometimes including concierge or butler service

For families, this often translates into smoother days and happier kids. For couples, it means space, privacy, and flexibility.

How flights really work in Mauritius packages

Flights are chosen based on price, timing, and comfort — and timing matters a lot. Many clients want the earliest possible arrival and latest possible departure to maximise their holiday.

Seat selection is another big one. Many airlines now charge extra for pre-selected seats on lower fare classes. One reason families often prefer Air Mauritius is that they allow families travelling with children to pre-select seats at no extra cost (policy can change, but it’s a real benefit when available).

Airport taxes are always included — no surprises there.

Is all-inclusive worth it in Mauritius?

Honestly? Yes — for the right traveller.

For families with kids and teens, all-inclusive is fantastic. Kids want ice cream, pancakes, snacks, and drinks throughout the day, and resort prices are set for an international market, not South African Rand. All-inclusive keeps things easy and predictable. It is also ideal for anyone who’s all about the “classic” Mauritius resort vibe: sun, sea, and sandy beaches with maximum time spent at the resort.

If you plan to explore the island and eat out during the day, half-board is often enough. You still enjoy great hotel meals while discovering local cafés and beach restaurants.

Personal tip: bring a few bottles of your favourite South African wine to enjoy in your room or on your balcony. Resorts usually charge corkage in restaurants, but a pre-dinner glass with a view is hard to beat. And don’t forget to stock your minibar with some locally sourced cool drinks — refreshing and easy!

Evenings here always end on a sweet note

Extras I often recommend adding

These aren’t always included, but they can transform the trip:

  • Private airport transfers – no waiting, no multiple hotel stops, much easier
with kids (plus car seats if pre-booked)
  • Early check-in – Book early check in for one room only when you have
multiple rooms – this saves on extra night fees and makes your arrival day far more comfortable
  • Pre-booking dinners – resorts get busy, and popular restaurants fill up
    quickly
  • Comprehensive travel insurance – genuinely non-negotiable for peace of
    mind

Fine print that causes disappointment

Most disappointment comes from assumptions, not bad holidays.

Meal plans vary by resort – details like which restaurants are included, any
supplements that apply, and whether meals cover arrival day all make a difference. I always recommend reading quotes and resort factsheets carefully and asking
questions early.

Airline seat assignments can also cause frustration since airlines reserve the right to change seats. Schedule changes may occasionally disrupt travel plans as well.
While I always do my best to help find solutions, some issues are beyond anyone’s control.

For peace of mind, having travel insurance is strongly recommended to cover unexpected situations and costs.

Seeing it in person makes all the difference.
