As part of the 2025–2026 National Budget to support the tourism sector, the Government of Mauritius will be introducing a Tourist Fee of EUR 3 per night.
Effective from 1 October 2025, this fee will apply to every tourist staying in designated accommodation, including hotels, guesthouses, tourist residences, and private estates.
Please note that children under the age of 12 will be exempt from this fee.
The fee will be collected by the accommodation provider and remitted to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA). Proceeds will be used to fund sustainable tourism initiatives and improve infrastructure across the island.
Time: Mauritian time is two hours ahead of South African time.
Money: The monetary unit is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs) which is divided into 100 cents. Major currencies such as US Dollars and Euros, and even South African Rands, are accepted in most hotels and by many vendors. There is a facility for exchanging money on arrival at the airport in the arrival’s hall, just before you exit the terminal. Cash points are available at most banks where you may withdraw sums against your debit or credit card as long as they are valid abroad. All hotels and most shops accept major credit cards. Cash is really only required for tips, and purchases from beach vendors.
All our Mauritius holidays include clear guidance on currency use, tipping customs, and essential travel requirements.
Language: The official language is English and all notices and road signs are in English. While English is widely spoken, French and Creole are the languages used by the local people in everyday life.
Electricity: The electric current is 220/240 volts AC. Two-pin plugs are the same as in South Africa, but three-pin plugs have square prongs, the same as those in use in Britain. All hotels provide hairdryers.
Security: Ensure that your passports and valuables are safely stored in the safe in your room. It is not advised that tourists purchase excursions or cruises from unlicensed beach or street vendors. Prices may be attractive but the quality of service, safety of equipment or insurance coverage for passengers may be substandard to that of licensed operators. Please enquire with our ground handler at your resort or with the hotel concierge desk for more information on excursions.
Tipping: Tipping of hotel personnel is not mandatory, but a demonstration of your appreciation for good service is welcomed. Personnel who are deserving of tips are porters, room cleaners and waiters in bars and restaurants who have been particularly helpful. Tipping of transport personnel is also appreciated and drivers of transfer vehicles, tour coach drivers and guides who are deserving of recognition. Tipping should be in local currency.
Shopping: Shopping in Mauritius is a popular activity, with high-quality goods available at local boutiques, factory shops or on the beach. Quality jewellery purchases include diamonds and gold, which are duty free in recognised shops. Pearls are sold by beach vendors and range from high quality to the everyday freshwater variety. Many hotels have their own shops selling local products and leisurewear. Factory shops are located all over the island, but it is the responsibility of the buyer to ensure their authenticity. It is illegal to purchase or remove shells from the island unless obtained from a licensed vendor.
When to visit Mauritius
The island enjoys a mild tropical climate year-round, with two distinct seasons: a warm, humid summer from November to April and a relatively cool, dry winter from June to September. Cyclone season, typically from January to March, poses the highest risk of tropical storms and heavy rainfall.
The east coast of the island generally experiences more wind compared to the north/west side. This can be advantageous in summer, as the breeze can feel refreshing. However, in winter, the east coast might be cooler due to the wind. Notably, many hotels heat their pools during winter, making swimming and relaxation enjoyable for everyone.
Additionally, special offers are often available along the east coast during winter, making it an appealing destination for travellers seeking a great deal.
Due to evolving global weather trends, these conditions may vary.
When to get the best Mauritius Deals
The most cost-effective times for South Africans to travel to Mauritius are typically during the island’s shoulder seasons (April, May, September, and October) and low season (June to August and sometimes November). During these periods (ideally outside school holidays) accommodation prices are generally lower while the weather remains favourable. We’ll be able to let you know about special offers from airlines and hotels and recommend considering travelling mid-week to often further reduce costs. Avoiding peak holidays like South African school breaks and Mauritius’s high tourist seasons (December to February and July to August) can also help save money on your trip.
“The early bird gets the worm” holds true in Mauritius too. Many resorts offer fantastic early bird discounts, so booking at least three months in advance typically secures excellent deals.
If you are planning your honeymoon, here’s some great news: Most hotels offer honeymooners special discounts and additional perks if you are travelling within 12 months of your wedding date. Special Discounts and additional benefits are typically also available for milestone anniversaries like the 5th, 10th, 15th, etc., with eligibility extending six months before or after the anniversary date.
Our clients consistently find that the best-value Mauritius holiday packages are available during these quieter periods.
Yearn to Return? Planning to return to Mauritius, and thinking about revisiting your favourite resort? Let us know, as some resorts provide discounts for repeat clients.
What Meal Plans are offered in Mauritius Packages?

What to pack for your Mauritius trip
When preparing for your trip to Mauritius, as a guide, keep in mind the luggage allowances: up to 23kg in economy class and 32kg in business class for checked bags. Pack your best beach and casual attire, ideal for daytime activities as most resorts maintain a casual atmosphere where beachwear is commonly worn during the day.
Knowing what to pack ensures your Mauritius trip is comfortable and stress-free from the start.
Evening attire typically leans towards smart casual, with men often required to wear long trousers and closed shoes (please verify specific hotel dress codes at the time of booking). Essential items include sunglasses, sunscreen, flip flops, a sun hat, and a beach bag. Remember to pack any necessary medications in your carry-on luggage!
Ensure you take along chargers for all your devices. Bringing your own goggles and snorkels is recommended, as equipment is usually only available to guests during snorkelling excursions. Also, bringing beach shoes is advisable (especially for kids) for added comfort and protection while exploring Mauritius’ shores. Don’t forget mosquito repellent and consider bringing an underwater camera to capture memorable moments.
