For a mix of beach days and sightseeing, we recommend visiting Mauritius in April or May, or between September and November. These periods avoid the hottest summer months and the coolest part of winter. April is a good choice for warm sea temperatures, while September to November generally brings lower rainfall.
Your choice should also depend on where you stay. A sheltered beach can make a difference during the cooler, windier months. Someone planning long days in the water may prefer different dates from someone who wants to hike, play golf or spend time sightseeing.
These are typical seasonal patterns, rather than a forecast for your travel dates. Conditions vary between coasts, and the central plateau is generally cooler than the beaches.
JANUARY
SUMMER
January is one of the hottest months, with high humidity and frequent rain. The sea is warm, but storms can interrupt swimming, boat trips and other outdoor activities. Summer winds are generally lighter than winter trade winds, apart from unsettled weather.
Choose a resort with comfortable indoor spaces and activities as well as a beach you like. Staying on a particular coast does not remove the risk of summer storms.
February
SUMMER
February is typically the wettest month across Mauritius. Coastal conditions remain hot, with warm water and a greater chance of heavy showers. The north and west may offer different conditions from the east on a particular day, but neither guarantees dry weather.
February suits travellers who enjoy tropical heat and can adjust their plans. Avoid making one boat trip or outdoor excursion the only highlight of your holiday.
March
SUMMER
March remains hot and humid, and it is still among the wetter months. Northern areas retain summer warmth, while rainfall remains substantial on the east coast too.
Allow room to move outdoor plans around the forecast. When comparing resorts, ask about the swimming beach, sheltered areas and alternatives for rainy days instead of choosing by coast alone.
April
Recommended
April generally receives less rain than January to March, while the sea retains its summer warmth. This makes it a useful month to consider when swimming is a priority.
Compare resorts across the island rather than limiting your search to one coast. You can plan a holiday around beach time and excursions, while still allowing for showers and checking conditions before boat trips.
May
Recommended
May is a transition month. Temperatures begin to ease, rainfall generally decreases, and the southeast trade winds become more established.
For a holiday centred on swimming and relaxing outdoors, start by comparing sheltered northern and western resorts. Ask about the specific beach and pool position. Pack a light layer for evenings, particularly towards the end of the month.
June
Winter
June brings milder temperatures and lower rainfall than summer. The northern region is noticeably cooler than in January, and southeast trade winds are more persistent during this part of the year.
Consider June for a mix of resort time and days out. If swimming is central to your holiday, ask about wind protection and whether the resort has a heated pool operating during your stay.
July
Winter
July is among the coolest months. The east and south coasts can feel particularly breezy, and the sea is cooler than in summer. Sheltered western beaches are worth considering if you prefer less wind.
Choose your resort carefully for a school-holiday beach trip. Check the pool heating, beach exposure and activities available when you do not feel like swimming. Bring something warmer for evenings and trips inland.
August
Winter
August remains cool by Mauritian standards. Northern climate records show temperatures similar to July, while rainfall across the island is generally lower than during the summer months.
Keep wind protection high on your resort checklist. A sheltered swimming beach and a heated pool may matter more than a large beachfront. For water sports, ask which activities suit the location and your experience level.
September

September generally brings low rainfall and warmer days than July and August. Northern climate records still show a noticeable breeze, so the change towards summer does not happen all at once.
It is a useful month to compare for sightseeing and beach time. For a swimming-focused stay, continue to prioritise a sheltered beach and ask about the conditions at your shortlisted resorts.
October
Recommended
October is usually the driest month across Mauritius. Temperatures rise, making it a strong option for combining the beach with sightseeing. It is also a transition month, so some winter wind can remain.
Compare east- and south-coast resorts alongside northern and western options. Check the individual beach setting rather than assuming that every resort on the same coast has identical conditions.
November

November marks the start of the warmer summer season. Northern climate records show hot days and relatively low rainfall compared with January to March. Summer winds are generally lighter, although daily conditions vary.
Consider November if you want a holiday built around swimming and spending time outdoors. Compare resorts across the island, with attention to beach access, shade and the activities you want nearby.
December
Summer
December brings summer heat and higher rainfall than October and November. Conditions can suit swimming and beach time, but showers and unsettled weather become a greater consideration.
Choose a resort where you would enjoy spending time even if an excursion is postponed. An exposed beach may feel pleasantly breezy on a hot day, but check its suitability for swimming and water sports.
The official tropical cyclone season runs from November to mid-May. This describes a period of risk, not a prediction that a cyclone will affect your holiday.
When travelling during this period, check the Mauritius Meteorological Services forecasts and follow local instructions. Keep outdoor plans flexible and check what your travel insurance covers for weather-related disruption.
Your departure dates can change the price of flights and accommodation. School holidays, Easter and the festive period can increase demand, while dates outside busy periods may offer better value. There is no single month that guarantees the cheapest complete holiday.
