For South African travellers, visiting the Maldives is convenient with no visa requirements. Instead, travellers complete and submit a Travel Declaration form electronically within 96 hours before their flights (into & out of the Maldives). Daily flights connect South Africa to the Maldives via major hubs like Doha on Qatar Airways or Dubai on Emirates. The Maldives is 3 hours ahead of South Africa, ensuring a smooth transition upon arrival.
Choosing the perfect hotel location for your Maldives holiday involves several key considerations, especially since each resort is uniquely situated on its own private island. Here’s how to make the right choice:
1. Island Atmosphere:
Lively vs. Secluded: Decide whether you prefer a vibrant atmosphere with more activities, dining options, and possibly more guests, or a secluded and tranquil setting for privacy and relaxation.
2. Accessibility:
Transfer Options: Consider how you’ll reach your chosen island. International flights arrive at Male’s Hulhule airport (which is on an island of its own). Some islands are closer to the main airport and accessible by speedboat. Transfers can also be by seaplane or domestic flight (and boat) depending on the distance. If your Maldives resort offers / requires a seaplane transfer, be aware that seaplanes only operate in daylight hours. The seaplane journey in itself is an experience, as you get stunning views of the atolls – make sure you get a window seat and that you get your camera out before boarding. The seaplane will usually land next to a floating platform, from which you will be picked up by boat to be taken the remaining few metres in shore to your resort. Factor in your travel time preferences and budget.
3. Accommodation Type:
Overwater Villas vs. Beach Bungalows: Determine whether you want to stay in an overwater villa for direct access to the ocean and panoramic views, or in a beach bungalow for easy access to the beach and resort amenities, and lush surroundings.
Our Tip: Why not split your stay between beachfront and overwater villas. Start with a few nights on the beach for easy access and family-friendly amenities. Then, switch to an overwater villa for privacy and breathtaking sea views. Resort staff are happy to assist with room transfers, making it easy to enjoy the best of both worlds during your stay.
In the Maldives, the term “villa” often refers to various types of accommodation, ranging from rooms to suites, rather than a standalone villa or multiple-room residence.
4. Activities and Excursions:
Resort Facilities: Check the activities and amenities offered by the resort, such as snorkelling, diving, spa services, water sports, kids club and some complimentary excursions.
5. Dining Options:
Restaurant Choices: Given the “one island-one resort” concept in the Maldives, dining options may be limited to what the resort offers. Ensure the resort provides culinary variety that suits your preferences and dietary needs.
6. Budget:
Affordability: Determine your budget and find a location that fits within. The Maldives offers accommodations ranging from luxury resorts to more budget-friendly options, allowing you to select one that aligns with your holiday budget.
This information is intended as a guideline and information may change without prior notice.
Requirements: Each passenger travelling, irrespective of age, must have their own, valid passport. All passports must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the stay and have two blank pages available at the time of travel. In addition, CHILDREN under the age of 18 years at time of emigration or immigration must travel with an unabridged birth certificate Furthermore, written consent and specific paperwork is required when a minor travels with one parent only and if any child/children are not the biological child/children of the adults who accompany them through a border post.
All travellers are required to submit the Maldives Traveller Declaration within 96 hours of departure from SA. It is a self-declaration and is free of charge: https://imuga.immigration.gov.
Green tax is payable at the rate of US$6 per person / per day, this is usually included in our quotes.
International flights arrive at Male’s Hulhule airport (which is on an island of its own). Some islands are closer to the main airport and accessible by speedboat. Transfers can also be by seaplane or domestic flight (and boat) depending on the distance
Time: Maldives time is three hours ahead of South African time.
Money: The official currency is the Rufiyaa (Rf). US$ are widely accepted in all resorts.
Language: The language of the Maldivians is Dhivehi and is very similar to several other languages from Sri Lanka, South East Asia and North India. English is also widely spoken in the Maldives.
Electricity: The standard electricity socket is the UK-style three-pin, although there are some variations, so an international adaptor will be useful.
Security: When staying within the confines of Maldivian resorts, safety is generally assured, and crime is not a significant worry for most tourists. However, it’s wise to remain vigilant about personal belongings, as incidents of petty theft can occur. If your travels take you to the capital city of Malé, exercise heightened caution.
Tipping: Tip porters, waiters and housekeeping at the end of your stay, at your discretion.
Shopping: Many luxury resorts have their own boutique stores, offering an exclusive selection of items that reflect the culture of the Maldives. From resort wear and swimwear to accessories and spa products, these boutiques provide a curated shopping experience.
The Maldives enjoys a year-round tropical warm climate with temperatures consistently ranging from 26°C to 31°C. The sea maintains an inviting warmth, averaging around 29°C throughout the year. This balmy environment offers high visibility, allowing snorkelers, divers, deep-sea fishermen, and cruisers to enjoy clear views of passing fish up to fifty meters away at times. While the best time to visit is typically from November to April, with high season running from December to March, activities can be enjoyed comfortably year-round despite occasional monsoon rains from May to October, peaking in June.
Given global changes in weather patterns, please keep in mind that weather conditions are subject to variability.
The period from May to the end of September typically offers the best travel deals for visiting the Maldives. Even during rainy weather, the Maldives retains its majestic allure!
“The early bird catches the worm” holds true in the Maldives too. Many resorts offer fantastic early bird discounts, so booking early usually secures great deals.
If you’re planning a honeymoon or celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary, it’s advisable to inform us at the time of inquiry. Depending on the hotel, special rates and additional benefits may be available.
Guests at Maldivian resorts typically stay on one island (= one resort) for their entire visit, making an all-inclusive meal plan a popular choice. This option covers breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and beverages (including alcoholic and non-alcoholic), providing convenience and peace of mind. However, offerings vary among resorts—some include premium alcoholic beverages and a dine-around concept, while others may have more restrictions, such as limits on dining venues or additional charges for certain items.
Before booking, it’s important to review the specific details of the all-inclusive package to understand what is included. This ensures a seamless and enjoyable stay without unexpected expenses.
For those who don’t consume alcohol, a full board plan (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner) might suffice, although you may find yourself needing to order extra beverages to stay hydrated in the Maldives‘ tropical climate.
Ultimately, choosing the best meal plan depends on your preferences for convenience, dining variety, and budget.
A holiday in the Maldives is a true aquatic adventure. Whether you’re snorkelling around the island, cruising on a speedboat, sailboat, or banana boat, or simply unwinding on the sun-drenched beaches, water activities abound at your stunning Maldives resort.
But there’s more to your stay than just water sports:
These activities ensure that your Maldives experience is unforgettable, filled with cherished memories of your tropical getaway.
When getting ready for your Maldives trip, remember that different airlines have different baggage allowances (as you will be travelling via the Middle East). If you’re taking a seaplane transfer, the luggage allowance is a little more restrictive than your commercial flight – you are allowed 20kg per person of baggage and one piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 5kg.
Remember that no alcohol may be imported.
Be sure to take along your best beach and casual wear, perfect for the day while a light rain jacket might come in handy in the event of the occasional rain shower. Include a couple of dressier outfits for evening dinners in the relaxed luxury setting.
Essentials to pack include sunscreen, lip balm, a hat, and sunglasses, along with a mini first aid kit and any necessary prescription medication. Don’t forget an (underwater) camera and /or use your phone for capturing memories. Ensure you take along a travel adaptor as well chargers for all your devices.
Bringing your own snorkelling gear is recommended for a more enjoyable experience, despite rental availability at resorts.
As the Maldives is a Muslim country, it’s respectful to dress conservatively, particularly in public areas like airports, Male, and small villages.
Some resorts operate a “no shoes, no news” policy, allowing for barefoot luxury.
