Are You a Nature Lover or Do You Prefer Culture, Shopping and Nightlife?

Best Mauritius Resorts for Nature Lovers and Social Travellers

The question worth asking yourself is: Do you enjoy being surrounded by nature and tranquility, or do you prefer having restaurants, shopping and entertainment nearby?

If you’re a nature lover, the south and south-west of Mauritius may be the perfect fit for you. Areas such as Le Morne and Bel Ombre offer a more peaceful, unspoilt side of the island, with stunning scenery, lush greenery and a slower pace of life. This part of Mauritius feels more authentic and is ideal for travellers who want to disconnect from busy everyday life and reconnect with nature.

In this case, it’s more important to consider factors such as:

Easy access to nature, hiking trails and scenic viewpoints.

Beautiful surroundings and a sense of space and tranquillity.

Resorts that offer excellent facilities, as there are fewer shops and restaurants nearby.

On the other hand, if you enjoy browsing local markets, shopping, dining out and having plenty of restaurants and activities nearby, then the north of Mauritius may suit you better. Areas such as Grand Baie and Flic en Flac offer a lively atmosphere with plenty happening both during the day and in the evenings.

Again, there is no right or wrong choice – it simply comes down to the type of holiday you want. Some travellers dream of mountain views, nature and peaceful surroundings, while others love the buzz of restaurants, shopping and a vibrant atmosphere. Choosing an area that matches your travel style can make all the difference and ensure your Mauritius holiday feels exactly the way you imagined it.

Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort

Best for: Couples, active luxury travellers and nature enthusiasts

Why it works:

Islandwize match: Perfect for travellers who want luxury, but not a “sealed-off resort” experience. You can spend the morning exploring waterfalls or nature trails and return to a beautiful five-star setting in the afternoon.

Not ideal for: Travellers whose priority is a lively beach location with lots of restaurants and shops nearby.

Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge

Best for: Eco-conscious travellers and couples wanting authentic Mauritius

Islandwize match: This is for travellers who say: “We don’t need to be on the beach every day, we want to discover the real Mauritius.” A secret Mauritius combination: don’t choose between beach and nature, combine them.

Not ideal for: First-time Mauritius visitors who want a classic all-inclusive beach holiday.

Islandwize Matches

For the Cultural, Shopping and Nightlife Traveller

Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa

Best for: Travellers who want resort comfort with easy access to island life

Why it works:

Islandwize match: Perfect for travellers who like having a resort base but want the freedom to step outside and explore.

Not ideal for: Travellers looking for a secluded, quiet escape away from restaurants, nightlife, and the buzz of Grand Baie.

Pearle Beach Resort & Spa

Best for: Social travellers who want a beachfront stay close to local restaurants and activities

Why it works:

Islandwize match: Ideal for travellers who want a relaxed beachfront resort without feeling separated from everything outside the hotel.

Not ideal for: Travellers seeking a luxury 5-star experience, gourmet dining, vibrant resort nightlife,  extensive resort facilities, or a secluded, exclusive atmosphere.

Preskil Island Resort

Best for: Travellers wanting local culture, natural surroundings and easy access to southeast Mauritius

Why it works:

Islandwize match: Ideal for travellers who want a comfortable beachfront resort with access to the history, culture and natural attractions of southeast Mauritius.

Not ideal for: Travellers looking for busy nightlife and extensive shopping. Mahébourg is nearby for local culture, markets and restaurants, but it is quieter than Grand Baie.

Islandwize Insider Tip: Mauritius may look like a small island on the map, but don’t underestimate travel times. Depending on where your resort is located, getting to places like Grand Baie can take anything from 60 to 90 minutes each way. Taxis in Mauritius are also relatively expensive, and regular trips for dinners, shopping or nightlife can quickly add up.

Sometimes, paying a little more for a resort in the right location can actually offer better value and a far more enjoyable holiday experience, allowing you to walk to restaurants, browse local shops and enjoy an evening out without constantly relying on transport – if this is the type of holiday you are after.

The reality is that two beautiful resorts can offer completely different Mauritius holidays simply because of where they are located.
